By Air

Las Alpujarras are well served by the international airports at both Málaga, Almería and Granada. Almería and Granada are both significantly closer to the Alpujarras than Málaga, at between 1 and 2 hours by car, and the journey has the added advantage of being more scenic.

The following information is correct at the time of writing ( August 06 ) but do check with the airlines for service updates. The list is not exhaustive but we hope to have covered the majority of services offered by scheduled airlines.

As you will be aware the budget airlines operate a demand-based pricing policy so the cheapest advertised fares often disappear very swiftly. The best advice is always to book as early as practical. Where routes have only recently been announced and services have yet to commence it is often possible to pick up return flights for as little as €0.99 per leg.

It should also be noted that British Airways has become increasingly competitive with the budget airlines when flying from the UK to Málaga, and offers flights from more convenient airports such as Heathrow, at less intrusive flight times.

By Car

Many Northern Europeans take advantage of the cheap petrol prices in Spain and mainland Europe and arrive with us by car, having taken a scenic tour through Spain to reach us.

By car from the UK the cheapest option is to take a ferry to Northern France , and drive down avoiding toll motorways where possible. Another alternative is take a ferry service direct to either Santander or Bilbao , ports in Northern Spain . Brittany Ferries ( http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/ ) travel twice weekly between Plymouth and Santander from mid-March through to November. The ferry journey takes 18 hours. P&O ferries ( http://www.poferries.com/ ) travel twice weekly between Portsmouth and Bilbao from April through to early January. This longer route takes 35 hours. Both of these ferry journeys will save at least 20 hours driving time, a considerable amount of petrol, and possibly several arguments about who is the best at map reading.

Car Hire

Car hire in Spain is amongst the cheapest in Europe , and you can expect to pay as little as 20 Euros per day for a small car out of peak season. We advise booking early with a reputable company who have a presence at your destination airport. We have personal experience of, or have heard good reports of the following companies :

Driving in Spain

Petrol stations are usually signed gasolineras and more often than not you will be served by a pump attendant who will both fill your tank and take your money. The magic words to use are 'lleno, por favor' ( pronounced 'yeno, paw fabor" ) which requests a full tank of petrol. Self-service petrol stations are signed autoservicios.

Unleaded petrol pumps will be marked sin plomo and diesel pumps will be marked gasóleo. Expect to pay significantly less than UK pump prices, particularly for diesel.
