Blue Sky Escapes
The Region

Sandwiched between the Mediterranean sea and the Sierra Nevada , Las Alpujarras comprises a series of white-washed villages perched on the slopes of the lower Sierra, and the opposing hills of the Contraviesa. Today tourism is flourishing in the Western Alpujarras. Walkers, and those with a taste for natural beauty, have been drawn to the famous villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, where the mountain Mulhacén provides a spectacular backdrop to the pretty villages.

The central and eastern Alpujarra remain relatively untouched by tourism. Farming remains the primary local activity, and the hillsides are terraced with almonds, olives and vines. The fertile slopes are irrigated by a system of ancient moorish water channels, known as acequia, which distribute the melt water from the High Sierra to the farms below. Above the villages lies a vast National Park, ensuring that the beauty of the region remains untouched by modern developments. The park is a green oasis of mountain oaks, chestnut and pine trees, cut through by mountain streams. Here weather beaten shepherds still graze flocks of sheep and goats, and the sound of their bells rings through the valleys. With patience one can spot wild ibex, mountain goats, golden eagles, and even wild boar.

We believe Las Alpujarras uniquely combines exquisite natural beauty with a traditional Spanish lifestyle, and all within one hours drive of the famous Andalucían coast. Perfect for a holiday, and also perfect for a better life.
